Arizona StateatNo. 10 Texas A&M

Sat, Sept 1211:00 AM CT · ABCKyle Field, College Station Line: Texas A&M −14.5 · O/U 50.5 Series: A&M won the only meeting, 38–17 in 2015

Texas A&M should win by about two touchdowns, and the only Sun Devil path to something closer runs through Cutter Boley's arm and the one thing this Aggie defense did badly last year: give up the big play. The Aggie pass rush against a rebuilt Sun Devil line is the widest computed gap on the board; Arizona State's counter is a quarterback who threw six touchdowns in his first start behind a line that let Missouri State reach Marcel Reed twice.

We think Texas A&M wins by about two touchdowns. A&M's pass rushers should spend the day in the Arizona State backfield, because the Sun Devils are breaking in new blockers. The one way Arizona State keeps it close: long passes. Their quarterback threw six touchdowns last week, and long passes were the one thing the A&M defense gave up too often last year.

Three Tells, Watch the First Quarter

  1. Reed's first three dropbacks. A clean pocket against Brian Ward's blitz packages means the five new starters have figured out the communication that failed early against Missouri State; two scrambles means the Sun Devils have found their equalizer.Watch the first three times Reed drops back to pass. If he has time to throw, A&M's five new blockers are settling in. If he is running for his life twice, Arizona State has found its edge.
  2. The first Sun Devil deep shot. A&M's 2025 defense stopped almost everything and surrendered the occasional 50-yard play; a receiver behind the safeties by the end of the first quarter says that flaw survived the offseason. The first long pass Arizona State tries. Last year A&M's defense stopped almost every play but gave up a few huge ones. If a Sun Devil receiver gets behind the defense early, that problem is still there.
  3. Two Aggie sacks before the second quarter. The board's widest gap (+72) is the Aggie front against a Sun Devil line that lost its first-round tackle; if it is real, it shows up immediately. Two sacks by A&M in the first quarter. That is the biggest mismatch on our board. If it is real, it will show up right away.

The upset math: Arizona State covers +14.5 by turning A&M's −9 turnover luck from last year into a +2 day and hitting one deep shot early. Base rate: favorites of 14.5 or more went 712-38 straight up since 2023 (94.9%), covered 49.9% of the time, median winning margin 28.

How Arizona State keeps it close: take the ball away twice and hit one long touchdown early. For the record, teams favored by this much have won 712 times and lost 38 since 2023, and the typical win is by 28 points.

Availability: LB Daymion Sanford expected back but not confirmed after missing the opener; WR Madden Williams out for the season; Arizona State lost LB Fiaseu, CB Pringle and DL Gardner for the season in camp, nothing new since. Checked Sept 10; Friday's pass re-checks.
