Right winner, right shape, and we undersold the Aggies on both sides of the ball. We said Texas A&M 33, Arkansas 19; A&M won by 27, and the market (A&M by 14) and the model (by 12) undersold it too. The shape was the board's: 231 rushing yards on 49 carries, four rushing touchdowns, 38 minutes of possession, against the softest run defense on the schedule. What the board did not draw was the defense. We gave Arkansas slight edges throwing on the Aggie coverage; KJ Jackson went 13 of 25 for 111 with Dalton Brooks's interception on his second throw, and Chris Marshall's 26-yard touchdown with 24 seconds left in the first quarter was the last Arkansas point and the only completion past 20. We called the protection Even and Marcel Reed was never sacked; we called coaching and luck Even and the turnover, both Razorback fourth downs and a 12-men flag on a 27-yard field goal all went A&M's way. Four wrong chips, all four wrong in A&M's favor. David Olano's 57-yarder as the half ended was A&M's longest since 1999. Every pregame claim is graded in the recap, misses first.

Before the game we wrote down Texas A&M 33, Arkansas 19, and the game gave us Texas A&M 34, Arkansas 7, so we had the right winner and the right kind of game and guessed the size of the win too small, as did the betting line and our computer. A&M ran the ball 49 times for 231 yards and four touchdowns, which is what we said would happen. What we did not see coming was A&M's defense: we gave Arkansas a small edge throwing the ball, and its quarterback, KJ Jackson, completed 13 of 25 for 111 yards with one intercepted on his second throw; Arkansas scored once, late in the first quarter, and never again. We called A&M's pass blocking a toss-up, and Reed was never tackled behind the line; we called coaching and luck a toss-up, and every break went A&M's way. Four of our matchup calls were WRONG, all four in A&M's favor. Every prediction we made is graded in the recap, the misses first.

The words we use

The words we use: the call was the score we wrote down before the game and left alone · the market is the betting line, the number the people wagering real money expected the favorite to win by · the model is our computer's own guess, printed so you can compare · tells were the three early signs we said to watch; each is graded below on whether the read was right · edges are the pregame matchup calls, left exactly as printed.

Three Tells, Graded

  1. Reed's yards per attempt over his first 15 throws: RIGHT. Fifteen throws for 132, 8.8 an attempt, past the seven that said the last two weeks were the opponents. It was 4.9 at the half, and Kiotti Armstrong's 54-yard catch-and-run carried it over; the finished line, 13 of 19 for 170 with no interception and no sack, was his best of the season.Early sign No. 1: RIGHT. We said seven yards a throw over Reed's first 15 passes would mean his bad games were about the opponents. He got 8.8, though one 54-yard play after a short catch did most of the work, and he finished with his most efficient game of the season.
  2. Pressure on one of four of Jackson's first 20 dropbacks: PARTLY. Four, not the five we set: three hurries and Marco Jones's sack, all in the second quarter, on the two Arkansas drives that ended in a missed 55-yard field goal and a three-and-out. Those four were also the night's total.Early sign No. 2: PARTLY right. We said five hurries or tackles behind the line on Jackson's first 20 passing plays meant the pass rush was real. A&M got four, all in the second quarter, and that was all it got in the game.
  3. Seventy-five yards on the Aggie backs' first 15 carries: PARTLY. Seventy-two, three short, with two touchdowns among them; the backs finished 39 for 149, 3.8 a carry, and Reed had the longest run (23) and three of the six of 14 or more. The two-touchdown line was built on something real; the backs were only part of it.Early sign No. 3: PARTLY right. A&M's running backs gained 72 yards on their first 15 carries, three short of the 75 we set, and averaged 3.8 a carry for the game. The running game was real; the longest run was the quarterback's.

The Edge Strip

The chips below are our pregame calls, left as printed. Four of the twelve board pairings graded RIGHT, four PARTLY, four WRONG. The run blocking, the backs and special teams held; the three chips on the Aggie front were PARTLY, because 22 Arkansas carries and one sack is not a four-quarter test; the three Evens all went A&M's way; and the two chips on Jackson throwing against the Aggie coverage were the worst misses on the page, the coverage chip wrong for a third straight week, this time the other way. The full regrade is in the recap.

Before the game we rated 12 matchups, three of them toss-ups, and the list below is exactly what we printed. We got 4 right, 4 half right, and 4 WRONG. A&M's running game and kicking game went the way we said. Our three toss-ups all went A&M's way. Our worst misses were the two calls that favored Arkansas throwing the ball against A&M's pass defense, which we have now been WRONG about three weeks in a row.

The upset math applied: the base rate we printed said favorites of 13 to 15 points in the first five weeks were 117-17 since 2023, with a median margin of 17. A&M was one more favorite's win, by 27.

What the history said: teams favored by about two touchdowns this early had won 117 games and lost 17, usually by about 17 points. A&M won, as most of them do, by 27.

Margin: Texas A&M by 27 · Line was Texas A&M −14 at both books, Monday through Saturday morning · Total 41 against 51.5 Monday and 50.5 / 50 Saturday
